Two coyotes attacked a promising young musician as she was hiking alone in a national park in eastern Canada, and authorities said she died Wednesday of her injuries. The victim was identified as Taylor Mitchell, 19, a singer-songwriter from Toronto who was touring her new album on the East Coast.

Mitchell was an up-and-coming folk and country musician who was nominated for a 2009 Canadian Folk Music Award in the Young Performer of the Year category.

She was hiking solo on a trail in Cape Breton Highlands National Park in Nova Scotia on Tuesday – Cape Breton is identified as the heart of the “Celtic Canada” - when the attack occurred. She was airlifted to a Halifax hospital in critical condition and died Wednesday morning, authorities said.

Coyotes, which also are known as prairie wolves, are found from Central America to the United States and Canada. Wildlife biologist Bob Bancroft said coyote attacks are extremely rare because the animals are usually shy.”It’s very unusual and is not likely to be repeated,” Bancroft said. “We shouldn’t assume that coyotes are suddenly going to become the big bad wolf.”  (huffingtonpost.com)

Due coyote hanno attaccato una giovane e promettente musicista, che stava passeggiando sola in un parco nazionale nella parte orientale del Canada; le autorità hanno annunciato che la giovane è deceduta mercoledì a causa delle ferite riportate. La vittima è Taylor Mitchell, 19 anni, cantautrice di Toronto, nella East Coast canadese nell’ambito del tour per il suo nuovo album.

La Mitchell era una musicista folk e country emergente, nominata anche per il 2009 Canadian Folk Music Award fra i giovani artisti della sua categoria.

La diciannovenne martedì stava facendo del trekking su un sentiero nel Cape Breton Highlands National Park, nello stato canadese della Nova Scotia – Cape Breton è identificato come il cuore del “Canada Celtico” -  quando si è verificata l’aggressione. E’ stata trasportata in elicottero all’ ospedale di Halifax in condizioni critiche, ed è morta  la mattina del giorno dopo.

I coyote, noti anche come lupi della prateria,vivono nel Centro e Nord America. Il biologo Bob Bancroft ha spiegato che gli attacchi dei coyote sono estremamente rari, perché questi animali sono di solito molto timidi. “E ‘molto raro e non è destinato a ripetersi – ha detto Bancroft – non dobbiamo pensare che i coyote stiano improvvisamente diventando lupi cattivi”.
