The dissident republican splinter group Óglaigh na hÉireann has claimed responsibility for planting an under-car bomb in east Belfast that injured the girlfriend of a police officer last week. Reports to a newspaper have claimed the group, using a recognised codeword, said that it was a mercury tilt-switch-type device designed to cause maximum damage to the passenger side of the vehicle.
This attack is believed to be the first time ONH has used an under-car bomb, suggesting that someone with that expertise may have joined its ranks. Under-car bombs were widely used during the Troubles by the Provisional IRA and INLA, and at a later stage by loyalists.
In its statement, the republican organisation said a serving police officer who works as a dog handler was the intended target. (4NI.co.uk)
Il gruppo repubblicano dissidente Óglaigh na hÉireann, nato da una scissione nel Continuity IRA, ha rivendicato la responsabilità della bomba piazzata sotto un’automobile nella zona est di Blefast, che ha ferito la compagna di un ufficiale di polizia nella scorsa settimana. Una chiamata fatta ad un giornale, usando un codice riconosciuto, ha spiegato che l’ordigno era stato concepito per causare il massimo danno al lato del passeggero della vettura.
E’ la prima volta, a quanto sembra, che l’OHN (letteralmente, “Guerrieri di Irlanda), hanno utilizzato un simile congegno, cosa che fa pensare che qualcuno di esperto possa essersi unito al gruppo. Ordigni piazzati sotto le auto sono stati utilizzati, nel periodo dei Troubles, dalla Provisional IRA e dall’INLA, e successivamente dai paramilitari lealisti.
Nella rivendicazione, il gruppo repubblicano ha spiegato che l’ufficiale di polizia, il cui compito è addestrare i cani, era l’obiettivo designato.
