Statement from Ruairí Ó Brádaigh, President, Republican Sinn Féin

The result of the Lisbon referendum in the 26 Counties makes for further integration into the EU, that is more power to Brussels and less power in Ireland.

The current economic recession was harnessed by the Yes advocates to stir up the fears of the people. Massive resources were deployed at home and abroad and false promises made of “jobs” and “recovery” by simply voting Yes.

The reason for such a massive swing in sixteen months towards the Yes side was the fear about the economy and the doubling of unemployment since the last Lisbon referendum.

The entire print media were unashamedly pro-Treaty in a vote which was not about EU membership. Will those who promoted Yes not deliver on their promises of jobs and recovery and will the compliant media hold them to their commitments?

I wish to express gratitude to all Republican Sinn Féin members and supporters who worked hard to oppose this tightening of the EU grip on Ireland.

“Il risultato del referendum di Lisbona nelle 26 contee realizza un’ulteriore integrazione all’interno dell’Unione europea che porta più potere a Bruxelles togliendolo all’Irlanda.

L’attuale recessione economica è stata sfruttata dai sostenitori del ” Sì” per fomentare le paure della gente. Ingenti risorse sono state impiegate in patria e all’estero per false promesse all’insegna di “occupazione” e di “ripresa” che sarebbero arrivati semplicemente votando sì.

La ragione di un tale imponente cambio di direzione  in sedici mesi nei confronti del  “Sì” è stata la paura per la situazione economica e il raddoppio della disoccupazione accaduti dopo lo scorso referendum di Lisbona.

Tutti i media si sono schierati spudoratamente pro Trattato di Liosbona in un voto che non comportava assolutamente la revisione dell’adesione all’Unione europea. Ma i promotori del “Sì” non manterranno le loro promesse di posti di lavoro e  di ripresa economica,  e allora i media accondiscendenti continueranno in questa farsa?

Desidero esprimere gratitudine a tutti i membri e i  sostenitori del Republican Sinn Féin che hanno lavorato duramente per opporsi a questo inasprimento del controllo della UE sul territorio irlandese”.
