Coleraine councillor Billy Leonard has been selected by Sinn Fein colleagues to become an assembly member in East Derry. He is succeeding the party’s Francie Brolly who is to retire. Mr Leonard is a former Orangeman, RUC reservist and member of the SDLP. Following his selection he said it was an honour to be chosen to replace Mr Brolly “and to represent the people of East Derry”. Sostituirà Francie Brolly, che si è ritirato. Leonard è un ex orangista, ex riservista della polizia nordirlandese e militava nelle fila dell’SDLP. Dopo la s ua nomina ha commentato spiwgando come fosse un onore essere scelto per il posto di Brolly e che “rappresenterà tutta la gente di East Derry”.

Leading republican Marian Price has been released by detectives investigating the murders of two soldiers outside Massereene barracks in Antrim. Heavily armed police raided Price’s home in the Andersonstown area of west Belfast on Tuesday and she was taken away for questioning about the Real IRA killings last March.

Price and her sister Dolores were among those convicted over the 1973 IRA bombing outside the Old Bailey in which one person was killed and around 200 others injured. She is a leading member of the 32 County Sovereignty Movement, considered to be the Real IRA’s political wing. (UTV)

 

La leader repubblicana Marion Price è stata rilasciata dagli inquirenti che stanno investigando sull’omicidio, compiuto ad Antrim, di due soldati all’esterno della Caserma di Massereene. Poliziotti con armamento pesante hanno fatto irruzione nella casa della Price nella zona di martedì, e l’avevano arrestata per interrorla sugli omicidi di Real IRA del marzo scorso.

La Price, insieme a sua sorella Dolores, erano tra i condannati per la bomba dell’IRA fuori dall’Old Bailey nel 1973, attentato in cui una persona morì e circa 200 rimasero ferite. Marion Price è attualmente a capo del 32 County Sovereignty Movement, considerato il braccio politico di Real IRA.

Republican Sinn Féin today elected a new president to succeed Ruairi O’Bradaigh, who has led the organisation for more than 20 years. The veteran hard-line republican, 77, is retiring for health and age reasons. His replacement Des Dalton, from Co Kildare, has been vice-president since 2003.

At the party’s ard fheis, Mr O’Bradaigh vowed to remain active in republican circles. “My turn has come to step down as president. I do so on the grounds of age and health. All in all, I am in my 60th year as an active member of the republican movement.”

A teacher by profession and originally from Co Longford, Mr O’Bradaigh founded the organisation after a split with Gerry Adams and his supporters 23 years ago, famously walking out of a party conference. He has been appointed patron of the organisation.(BN.ie)

 

Il Republican Sinn Féin ha eletto oggi il nuovo presidente, che va a succedere a Ruairi O’Bradaigh che ha guidato il partito per più di vent’anni. Il veterano della linea dura repubblicana, 77 anni, si è ritirato per motivi di salute e di età. Lo ha sostituito Des Dalton, della Contea di Kildare, che è stato vicepresidente dal 2003.

Al congresso di partito, O’Bradaigh ha promesso di restare in ongi caso nella politica attiva. “Il mio momento per dimettermi da presidente è arrivato. Lo faccio per motivi di età e di salute. Alla fine, sono da 60 anni un membro attivo del movimento repubblicano”.

Di professione insegnante e originario della Contea di Longford, O’Bradaigh ha fondato questo partito insieme ai suoi sostenitori scindendosi da quello di Gerry Adams 23 anni fa, con la famosa uscita dalla conferenza del partito. E’ stato nominato patrono del RSF.

A new Irish republican dissident group is using a gang of young travellers to steal weapons from gun owners across Northern Ireland. Police are linking a recent upsurge in gun thefts to the Saor Uladh, the fourth dissident terrorist force to emerge from republicans disenchanted with the peace process. Saor Uladh (Free Ulster in english) pays up to £500 for a single gun, security sources told the Observer.

The PSNI also understands that the gang is getting information on gun owners from an Antrim-based crime gang once linked to the Loyalist Volunteer Force. This gang, whose core are members of a former loyalist paramilitary family from the Ballysillan area of Belfast, are members of a Northern Ireland gun club. (Guardian)

 

Un nuovo gruppo repubblicano dissidente sta utilizzando una banda di giovani travellers (gli “zingari” di Irlanda, ndr) per rubare pistole e simili ai proprietari di armi legalmente detenute. La polizia sta collegando l’aumento di ladri di armi a Saor Uladh, quarto gruppo dissidente terrorista emerso dalla disillusione repubblicana per il processo di pace. Saor Uladh (Ulster Libero in italiano) paga fino a 500 sterline per arma, secondo quanto una fotne interna alla polizia ha rivelato all’Observer.

La polizia nordirlandese è a conoscenza, inoltre, che la banda starebbe ottenendo le informazioni sui propiretari di armi da un’altra banda criminale, operante nella zona di Antrim, un tempo collegata alla Loyalist Volunteer Force. Questa banda, il cui nucleo è composto da una famiglia di ex paramilitari lealisti di Ballysillan, Belfast, apparterrebbe a un club di tiro in Irlanda del Nord.

British anti-fraud officials seized properties and cash belonging to a prominent Irish republican on Tuesday, sparking outrage in the nationalist community. Detectives from Britain’s Serious Organised Crime Agency (SOCA) confiscated eight houses in south Armagh, an apartment in south Belfast, proceeds of the sale of three other houses in south Armagh and a number of bank accounts.

The agency swooped after the Belfast High Court ruled that Dromintree farmer Sean Hughes used money from fraud and tax evasion to buy at least a dozen properties in the six counties, three of which he sold.

Democratic Unionist Party leader Peter Robinson alleged that Mr Hughes was a longtime member of the Provisional Irish Republican Army’s Army Council and was involved in many of the illegal organisation’s key operations from the late 1970s to mid-1990s.

But Sinn Fein MP for Newry and Armagh Conor Murphy hit out at the raids, declaring that Mr Hughes was a “sound republican who spent his entire adult life engaged in the struggle for Irish unity and independence.” He branded the British raids as “unacceptable,” saying that Mr Hughes had been “charged with nothing.” He stressed that in recent years Mr Hughes had championed the peace process and the campaign to end political policing. Agenti britannici anti-frode hanno sequestrato immobili e denaro appartenenti a un repubblicano irlandese martedì scorso, scatenando una grande indignazione nella comunità nazionalista. Gli investigatori britannici della Serious Organised Crime Agency (SOCA) hanno confiscato otto case a South Armagh, un appartamento a sud di Belfast, i proventi della vendita di tre altre case sempre a South Armagh e alcuni conti bancari.

L’agenzia si è attivata dopo che l’Alta Corte di Belfast ha stabilito che l’agricoltore di Domintree Sean Hughes ha utilizzato soldi provenienti da  frodi e evasione fiscale per acquistare almeno una decina di immobili nelle sei contee, tre dei quali hapoi rivenduto.

Il leader del Democratic Unionist Party, Peter Robinson, ha commentato Hughes è stato un membro di lunga data del Comando del Provisional Irish Republican Army ed è stato coinvolto in molte delle operazioni ilegali dell’organizzazione dalla fine del 1970 a metà degli anni 1990.

Ma il parlamentare dello Sinn Fein per Newry e Armagh Conor Murphy ha protestato contro il blitz, dichiarando che Hughes è un “buon repubblicano che ha speso la sua intera vita impegnandosi nella lotta per l’unità e l’indipendenza irlandese”. Murphy ha descritto quest’operazione britannica come “inaccettabile”, spiegando che Hughes “non è stato accusato di nulla”, e sottolineando che negli ultimi anni  Hughes ha sostenuto il processo di pace e la campagna per porre fine allo stato di polizia in Irlanda del Nord.

Republican Action Against Drugs (RAAD) has again warned that it will take “immediate and direct action” against drug dealers in Derry. The organisation insists the “onus” is on dealers to “come forward” and admit their involvement in “this death trade”. If this doesn’t happen, warns the group, it will take what it describes as “immediate and direct action.”

In a statement, RAAD said: “We have noticed that it is only after we are onto the dealers that a lot of them want to take up the offer of our amnesty. This is not acceptable. From now on, the onus is on the dealers to give up their death trade and come forward to us.”

The group insists its “amnesty” in relation to those who continue to sell drugs within the local community remains in place. In its statement, the organisation also claimed responsibilty for the shooting of a man in the Creggan area of Derry on Tuesday night last.

In its latest report, the Independent Monitoring Commission referred to the “growth of vigilante organisations which claim to want to ‘clean-up’ (their term) anti-social behaviour”. It is believed the group has been behind almost a dozen similar attacks in the city over the past year. (Derry Journal)

 

Il Republican Action Against Drugs (RAAD) ha avvisato nuovamente che prenderà “provvedimenti diretti e immediati” contro gli spacciatori di droga di Derry. L’organizzazione ha invitato gli spacciatori a “farsi avanti” e confessare il loro coinvolgimento in questo “commercio di morte”. Se questo non accadrà, ha avvisato il gruppo, ci saranno conseguenze “dirette ed immediate”.

In un comunicato, il RAAD ha spiegato: “Abbiamo notato che solo dopo che gli siamo addosso molti trafficanti vogliono accettare l’offerta della nostra amnistia. Questo è inaccettabile. D’ora in poi, spetta agli spacciatori abbandonare il loro commercio di morte e consegnarsi a noi “.

L’organizzazione ha ribadito che la sua “amnistia” per coloro che continuano a vendere droga all’interno della comunità locale rimane in vigore. Nel comunicato, il gruppo ha infine rivendicato la responsabilità per l’uomo colpito con armi da fuoco nella zona di Creggan, a Derry, la notte di martedì scorso.

Nel loro ultimo rapporto, l’Independent Monitoring Commission ha parlato di “crescita di organizzazioni di vigilantes che vogliono ripulire (il termine è loro) dai comportamenti antisociali. Si ritiene che questo gruppoi abbia effettuato all’incirca una dozzina di attacchi simili in città nello scorso anno.

Ryanair has flown straight into a new media storm over its 2010 charity calendar which features its own scantily clad employees. The National Women’s Council of Ireland (NWCI) has slammed the airline as “irredeemably old-fashioned” and accused it of a “serious lack of imagination.”

In response, the boss of Ryanair Michael O’Leary said the calendar was empowering for women and said the NWCI didn’t have “a clue how young women empower themselves.”

Describing the calendar as a work of “art,” the spokesman Stephen McNamara said it was “a step up from last year which makes it a little bit sexier.”  McNamara said the calendar was used to raise massive amounts of money for charities and that they were hoping that they would raise $160,000 next year. He said all staff participating in the calendar did so on a voluntary basis. (IrishCentral)

 

Ryanair sta volando in una nuova tempesta mediatica, per il suo calendario di beneficenza per il 2010, in cui appaiono delle sue dipendenti poco vestite. Il National Women’s Council of Ireland (NWCI) ha bollato come “irrimediabilmente antiquata” la compagnia aerea, e l’ha accusata di “preoccupante mancanza di immaginazione”.

La risposta è arrivata dal numero uno di Ryanair, Michael O’Leary, che ha detto che il calendario dà potere alle donne, aggiungendo che il NWCI “non ha idea di come le giovani donne promuovano se stesse”.

Descrivendo il calendario come “artistico”, il portavoce Stephen McNamara ha detto che “è leggermente più sexy rispetto a quello dell’anno scorso”. McNamara ha spiegato che il calendario è stato utilizzato per raccogliere  grandi quantità di denaro per beneficenza e che la compagnia spera di ricavarne $ 160.000 l’anno prossimo. Ha precisato che tutto il personale che partecipano al calendario lo ha fatto su base volontaria.

 

Hundreds of republicans clashed with riot police outside the Black Watch regiment’s Canadian headquarters in Montreal on Tuesday, delaying a visit by Prince Charles and the Duchess of Cornwall Camilla Parker Bowles.

Protesters outside the building, where the prince was due to present new regimental colours, waved Quebec’s fleur-de-lis flag and brandished “Get out of Afghanistan” placards while chanting: “Majesty go home”. Activists also waved the French Revolution-era patriotic flag, with its blue band replaced with green in solidarity with Irish republicanism, and pelted the regimental hall with eggs.

Fighting broke out when baton-wielding riot police moved in and activists sat down in the street, blocking the entrance. It took officers about 40 minutes to clear the protest. One activist sustained a head wound and another three were dragged from the crowd and arrested. They were released hours later after being charged under the Highway Code with blocking traffic. Centinaia di repubblicani si sono scontrati con la polizia in disordini scoppiati fuori dal quartier generale del reggimento dei Black Watch canadesi a Montreal, martedì scorso, che hanno ritardato la visita del Principe Carlo e della Duchessa di Cornovaglia Camilla Parker Bowles.

I manifestanti all’esterno dell’edificio, dove il principe doveva presentare i nuovi colori del reggimento, hanno sventolato le bandiere gigliate del Quebec ed esposto cartelli con la scritta “Via dall’Afghanistan”, intonando slogan come: “Maestà tornate a casa”. Gli attivisti, che hanno esibito inoltre vessilli della Rivoluzione Francese, con la banda blu sostituita con una verde per solidarietà con i repubblicani irlandesi, hanno bersagliato con uova l’ingresso della caserma.

Gli scontri sono iniziati quando poliziotti in assetto antisommossa sono arrivati a contatti con i manifestanti, seduti davanti in strada per bloccare l’ingresso. Ci sono voluti 40 minuti per riportare la calma. Un attivista ha riportato ferite alla testa, ed altri tre sono stati separati dal gruppo e arrestati. Sono stati rilasciati qualche ora dopo, con l’accusa di aver violato gli articoli del Codice Stradale sul blocco del traffico.

English Premier League clubs today overwhelmingly rejected a proposal to allow Celtic FC and Rangers FC to join the English top flight.
A proposal by Bolton chairman Phil Gartside to include the Old Firm clubs was rejected as neither “desirable or viable”.

The decision comes on the day that Rangers released their annual financial report which showed their debt had increased by almost £10m for the 12 months up to June 30, 2009 to a net total of £31.1 million.

 

I club della Premier League inglese hanno respinto con decisione la proposta di permettere al Celtic FC e ai Rangers FC di iscriversi nella massima serie d’Inghilterra. La proposta del presidente del Bolton, di includere i club dell’Old Firm è stata bollata come “nè auspicabile nè praticabile”.

La decisione è arrivata il giorno in cui i Rangers hanno pubblicato il loro bilancio annuale, che ha evidenziato un incremento di debiti per circa 10 milioni di sterline  dal 30 giugno 2009, per un netto di 31,1 milioni di sterline.

Two men have been arrested in connection with the murder of Kevin McDaid and the attempted murder of his neighbour last May. The pair, aged 45 and 46, were detained by detectives from the PSNI’s Serious Crime Branch in Coleraine, Co Derry, this morning.

Mr McDaid, father of four, was beaten to death outside his home in the Heights area of the town by a loyalist mob who had entered a mainly Catholic housing estate after Rangers beat rivals Celtic to the Scottish Premier League title.

Following the attack, the McDaid family lodged an official complaint with the independent Police Ombudsman office claiming the PSNI did not do enough to prevent the attacks. The community worker’s widow, Evelyn, was also injured in the attacks and sustained extensive head wounds. (RTE)

 

Due uomini sono stati arrestati per l’omicidio di Kevin McDaid e il tentato omicidio di un suo vicino nel maggio scorso. I due, 45 e 46 anni, sono stati fermati questa mattina dal reparto per i crimini violenti della polizia nordirlandese di Coleraine, nella Contea di Derry.

McDaid, padre di quattro figli, è stato picchiato a morte davanti la sua casa nella zona di Height da una gang lealista che stava scorrazzando principalmente nei quartieri cattolici dopo che i Rangers avevano vinto la Scottish Premier League superando gli avversari storici del Celtic FC.

Dopo l’aggressione, la famiglia McDaid ha presentato un reclamo ufficiale all’ufficio del difensore civico accusando la polizia di non aver fatto abbastanza per prevenire le aggressioni. Evelyn, la vedova di McDaid, che lavorava come operatore sociale, è rimasta anche lei coinvolta nell’attacco, e ha riportato ferite gravi alla testa.
