The Cooish – Manx Language Week begins yesterday (Saturday) and runs until November 14. The Inter-Gaelic festival is an eclectic mix of concerts, school workshops, lectures and music and language sessions with Manx musicians and singers as well as visiting performers from Ireland, Scotland and Cornwall.

The Cooish is a celebration of Gaelic language, music and identity organised by Yn Cheshaght Ghailckagh (the Manx Language Society), with support from the Manx Heritage Foundation, the Isle of Man Arts Council and local businesses – this year Manx Telecom and Cains. The festival is for everybody interested in Manx culture – whether you know any Manx or not, we’d love to see you throughout the week.

Hardline unionists in the Northern Ireland today spelled out their hopes of bringing down the region’s power-sharing government. The Traditional Unionist Voice (TUV), led by former Democratic Unionist Party (DUP) member Jim Allister, has already dented his one-time colleagues’ support at the polls. Now the fledgling party said it plans to use its strength among disaffected unionists angry at Sinn Féin’s inclusion in government to build political opposition to power-sharing in the North.

“Right across this Province we will see candidates elected who are committed to replace the present undemocratic structures and chaos with good government, built firmly not on appeasing terrorists, but on respecting the fundamentals of democracy,” he said.

Mr Allister told his party conference in Belfast he would build a political bridgehead in the Stormont Assembly where the DUP and Sinn Féin share power, with the aim of wrecking the system from within.

“Because with a large enough dissenting unionist bloc, it cannot survive,” he said. (BN.ie)

 

La linea dura dell’unionismo in Irlanda del Nord oggi ha illustrato la sua prospettiva di abbattere il governo in power-sharing nella regione. Il Traditional Unionist Voice (TUV), guidato dall’ex membro del Democratic Unionist Party (DUP), Jim Allister, ha già intaccato il bacino elettorale dei suoi ex colleghi. Ora il partito nascente ha detto che, al fine di costruire un’opposizione politica, ha intenzione di rafforzarsi  tra gli unionisti scontenti ed arrabbiati dell’inclusione dello Sinn Féin nel governo nordirlandese .

“In questa provincia vedremo candidati eletti  impegnati a sostituire le attuali antidemocratiche e caotiche strutture con il buon governo, costruito sulla fermezza, non sull’accondiscendenza al terrorismo, ma rispettando i fondamenti della democrazia “, ha detto Allister.

Allister ha detto al congresso del suo partito a Belfast che ha intenzione di costruire un ponte tra le forze politiche nel parlamento nordirlandese, dove il DUP e lo Sinn Féin governano in power-sharing, con l’obiettivo di abbattere questo sistema dall’interno.

“Perché con un sufficientemente grande blocco unionista dissenziente, non potrà sopravvivere”, ha detto Allister.

Dublin was brought to a standstill yesterday as up to 70,000 people took to the streets as part of a national day of protest. The Irish Congress of Trade Unions (ICTU) organized eight rallies across Ireland to protest against the $4bn in public cuts expected in the Irish budget on December 9. The rallies took place in Dublin, Cork, Galway, Limerick, Waterford, Sligo, Tullamore and Dundalk with Dublin by far the largest.

ICTU leader David Begg said a “more gentle way” was needed to narrow the fiscal deficit to 3 percent by 2013. He slammed the planned cuts as “economic madness,” and said they would stall any economic recovery and send the country “into a prolonged coma.” (IrishCentral)

 

La città di Dublino è stata bloccata ieri da più di 70.000 persone che hanno invaso le strade nell’ambito di una manifestazione di protesta. L’Irish Congress of Trade Unions (ICTU) ha organizzato otto marce in tutta Irlanda per protestare contro i 4 miliardi di dollari di tagli alla spesa pubblica previsti nella legge di bilancio del prossimo dicembre. Le manifestazioni si sono svolte a Dublino, Cork, Galway, Limerick, Waterford, Sligo, Tullamore e Dundalk. Quella della capitale irlandese è stata la maggiore.

Il leader dell’ICTU, David Begg, ha detto che questa modalità “più dolce” è stata necessaria per chiedere di ridurre il deficit fiscale al 3 per cento spalmando la riduzione fino al 2013. Ha bollato i tagli previsti come “follia economica”, spiegando che azzererebbero qualsiasi ripresa economica e metterebbero il paese “in uno stato di coma prolungato”.

Traditional Unionist Voice has apologised for its “childishness” after issuing a statement describing Irish as a “leprechaun language”. The statement was issued under the name of TUV vice-chairman Keith Harbinson and condemned the Department of Education for “wasting” money on Irish. The original press release was entitled “TUV Blast Leprechaun Language Waste” and distributed to media outlets.

However after being distributed to the media, the press release on the party’s website was changed to remove the term. A spokesman told the BBC the original words were a “childish mistake”. Mr Harbinson was displeased that the term “leprechaun language” was used. It had been added to the press release by an employee of the party. (BBC)

 

Il Traditonal Unionist Voice ha chiesto scusa per la sua “bambinata”, dopo aver diffuso un comunicato che definiva l’irlandese come “linguaggio da leprecauni”. La dichiarazione era emessa a nome del vicepresidente Keith Harbinson e accusava il Dipartimento dell’Educazione di “sprecare” soldi per l’irlandese. La nota originale era intitolata “Il TUV tuona contro gli sprechi per la lingua dei leprecauni”.

Dopo esser stato diffuso alla stampa, il comunicato sul sito del partito appariva però cambiato, senza quel termine. Un portavoce ha detto alla BBC che le parole iniziali erano stati un “errore infantile”. Harbison ha detto di essere molto dispiaciuto che sia stato utilizzato quel termine. Dal TUV hanno spiegato che il comunicato è stato diffuso da un impiegato del partito.

The Royal British Legion has warned it will “walk away” from a Remembrance Day parade in North Down if loyalists hijack the event.  The News Letter has learned that the UVF has threatened to attend the official Remembrance Day parade in Bangor’s Ward Park with the intention of joining the march.

A source close to the loyalist organisation told the News Letter the group wants to lead Sunday’s parade, which is meant to honour the sacrifice made by the brave men and women of the armed forces. The loyalist group claims it has the right to be there because of the 1912 UVF’s links to the Battle of the Somme. The rumours have caused outcry in North Down, where loyalist tensions have been ongoing for several months.

Bill Craig, County Manager of the Royal British Legion, which organises the official march, told the News Letter he had been “very disappointed” to hear about the plans. He said: “If this group shows up uninvited we will walk away; we will not be taking part in the march. They are not a bona fide organisation and so should not be taking part in the official march. This is not what the day is about.”

Speaking to the News Letter, Alliance MLA for North Down Stephen Farry said: “There is a very clear distinction to be made between the commemoration of those who sacrificed their lives honourably in the service of their country and in the pursuit of peace, and those who have been mixed up in paramilitary activity”. La Royal British Legion ha fatto sapere che abbandonerà la sfilata del Remembrance Day se i paramilitari lealisti saboteranno l’evento. La testata News Letter è venuta a conoscenza del fatto che l’UVF avrebbe intenzione di prendere parte alla parata ufficiale del Remembrance Day in programma la prossima domenica al Ward Park di Bangor, North Down, unendosi alla marcia.

Una fonte vicina all’organizzazione lealista ha detto al News Letter che il gruppo vorrebbe aprire la parata di domenica, destinata ad onorare il sacrificio di uomini e donne delle forze armate. Il gruppo rivendica il diritto di partecipare vista la partecipazione dell’UVF nel 1912 alla Battaglia della Somma. La voce della partecipazione ha suscitato malumori nel North Down,  da alcuni mesi attraversato da tensioni lealiste.

Bill Craig, responsabile di Contea del Royal British Legion, che organizzerà la marcia, ha dichiarato al News Letter di essere “estremamente contrariato” riguardo queste intenzioni. “Se quel gruppo – ha detto – si presenterà pur non essen do invitato noi abbandoneremo la marcia. Loro non sono un’organizzazione benefica, e non dovrebbero prendere parte a questa parata: non hanno nulla a che fare con questa giornata”.

Il membro dell’Assemblea Nordirlandese Stephen Farry, dell’Alliance Party, ha dichiarato a News Letter: “C’è un’evidente e chiara differenza da tracciare tra coloro che hanno sacrificato le loro vite con onore al servizio della propria patria e nel perseguimento della pace, e l’essere stati coinvolti in attività paramilitari”.

The number of loyalist paramilitary assaults has increased sharply, Northern Ireland’s ceasefire watchdog has said. The Independent Monitoring Commission said that between March and August, 38 people were attacked – the highest number in almost four years. It said members of the UDA and UVF were involved in events leading to the death of Coleraine man Kevin McDaid in May.

The commissioners added that they believed those involved were acting without the approval of paramilitary leaders.  The report said the UDA/UFF remained effectively split into two distinct groups – the mainstream UDA and the South East Antrim group. It said members of both factions remained involved in a range of criminal activity.

Regarding the UVF/Red Hand Commando, it said the completion of decommissioning in September was “a very significant and positive development”. The IMC said it believed UVF leaders took steps to prevent a violent reaction to the dissident republican killings of two soldiers and a policeman. Despite the progress made, the IMC said some members were involved in a wide range of criminal activity for personal gain.

On the Loyalist Volunteer Force (LVF), it reiterated its assessment of the group as a “small organisation without any political purpose”. (BBC)

 

L’osservatorio per il cessate il fuoco nel Nord Irlanda ha detto che le violenze dei paramilitari lealisti sono notevolmente aumentate. La Independent Monitoring Commission ha spiegato che fra marzo e agosto sono state attaccate 38 persone, il numero più alto negli ultimi 4 anni. Membri dell’UDA e dell’UVF, ha spiegato la commissione, sono anche coinvolti negli eventi che hanno portato alla morte di Kevin McDaid, cattolico di Coleraine, a maggio.

La commissione ritiene che coloro che sono coinvolti in queste azioni agiscano senza il consenso dei leaders paramilitari. Nel rapporto si dice che l’UDA/UFF risulta effettivamente divisa in due differenti gruppi: quello principale e il gruppo di South East Antrim. Si ritiene che membri di entrambi i gruppi siano coinvolti in tutta una serie di attività criminali.

Circa l’UVF/Red Hand Commando, il completo smantellamento dell’arsenale a settembre è stato “uno sviluppo realmente importante e significativo”. La IMC ha spiegato che i capi dell’UVF hanno preso iniziative prevenite azioni violente dopo l’uccisione, da parte dei repubblicani, di due soldati e di un poliziotto. Nonostante i progressi fatti però, la IMC ha spiegato che alcuni esponenti sono coinvolti in un’ampio ventaglio di attività criminali per guadagni personali.

Riguardo alla Loyalist Volunteer Force (LVF), viene ribadita la valutazione di questo gruppo in termini di “piccola organizzazione senza alcun progetto politico”.

The Official IRA (OIRA) will begin decommissioning its weapons within weeks, a senior source close to the process last night confirmed. Last month The Irish News revealed that the OIRA had begun talks with General John de Chastelain’s Independent International Commission on Decommissioning (IICD).

News of the talks had caused some surprise in political and security circles as the OIRA has been on ceasefire for the last 37 years. Despite having abandoned its “armed struggle” for more than three decades the OIRA is understood to have retained a significant amount of arms.

When it announced its ceasefire in 1972, it was believed to possess up to 400 rifles, a number of heavy machine guns and dozens of handguns. The organisation is understood to have been keen to resolve the arms issue before General de Chastelain ends his decommissioning role in February next year.

The OIRA, or ‘Stickies’ as it was nicknamed, emerged from a split in the IRA in 1971. The organisation was responsible for 52 killings during the Troubles. Despite apparently being on ceasefire since 1972 the group has sporadically used weapons during internal republican disputes or for so-called punishment attacks.

In October 2005 former OIRA leader Sean Garland was arrested at a Workers Party (former Official Sinn Féin) conference in Belfast after a request by the FBI that he be extradited to the US to be questioned about a multi-million-dollar international counterfeiting operation. (Irish News)

Il mese scorso The Irish News aveva rivelato che l’OIRA aveva avviato colloqui con il generale l’Independent International Commission on Decommissioning (IICD) del Generale John de Chastelain.

Le notizie di questi colloqui avevano destato un certo stupore negli ambienti politici e di sicurezza, visto che l’OIRA era in stato di “cessate il fuoco” da 37 anni. Quindi, pur avendo abbandonato la sua “lotta armata” per oltre tre decenni, si è chiarito che l’OIRA ha conservato una notevole quantità di armi.

Dopo l’annuncio del cessate il fuoco si pensava nel 1972, si pensava che l’organozzazione possedesse circa 400 fucili, un certo numero di mitragliatrici pesanti e dozzine di pistole. Si pensa che l’OIRA abbia voluto risolvere il problema delle armi prima che il generale de Chastelain terminasse il suo ruolo a febbraio del prossimo anno.

L’OIRA, o “Stickies” com’era soprannominata, nacque da una scissionr dell’IRA nel 1972. L’organizzazione è stata responsabile di 52 omicidi durante i Troubles. Nonostante il cessate il fuoco fosse in corso dal 1972, il gruppo ha sporadicamente usato le armi durante alcune faide interne repubblicane o per i cosiddetti attacchi punitivi.

Some former Provisional IRA members are helping dissident republican efforts to wreck the peace process, the paramilitary watchdog has said. The Independent Monitoring Commission said the dissident republican threat was the highest for almost six years.

It said most new recruits of Real IRA, Continuity IRA and Oglaigh nah Eireann were “inexperienced young males” but the involvement of former IRA members “significantly added to the threat”. Dissident republicans killed two soldiers and a policeman in March. (BBC)

 

L’osservatorio sulle attività paramilitari ha spiegato oggi che alcuni ex membri dell’ala Provisional dell’IRA starebbero aiutando i dissidenti repubblicani nei loro tentativi di interrompere il processo di pace. La Independent Monitoring Commission ha detto che la minaccia dei dissidenti repubblicani ha raggiunto il livello più alto almeno degli ultimi sei anni.

La Commissione ha detto che, beché la maggior parte delle nuove reclute sia composta da “giovani maschi inesperti”, il coinvolgimento di ex membri dell’IRA porta la minaccia a livelli molto più significativi. I dissidenti repubblicani hanno ucciso due soldati e un poliziotto nello scorso marzo.

Dozens of petrol bombs and paint containers were thrown as republican youths laid siege to a police station in south Armagh at the weekend. However, details of the attack, involving up to 50 people, were only released by police after a request for information was made by the News Letter.

Police estimated that 20 petrol bombs and 30 paint containers were thrown, along with a barrage of other missiles including bricks and stones, at the building in Crossmaglen, where a number of officers were stationed on Halloween night. Damage was caused to the exterior walls and gates of the station but no injuries were reported, a police spokesperson said yesterday. (NewsLetter)

 

Dozzine di molotov e lattine di vernice sono state lanciate da giovani repubblicani che hanno posto sotto assedio una stazione di polizia a South Armagh, nello scorso fine settimana. Ma i dettagli sull’attacco, che ha coinvolto non meno di cinquanta persone, sono stati diffusi solo dopo una precisa richiesta di informazioni da parte della testata News Letter.

La polizia stima che una ventina di molotov e una trentina di latte di vernice sono state lanciate, insieme ad una miriade di altri oggetti, fra cui pietre e mattoni, all’indirizzo dell’edificio di Crossmaglen, in cui alcuni agenti di polizia erano in servizio durante la notte di Halloween. Secondo un portavoce della polizia, i muri e il cancello dell’edificio hanno riportato danni, mentre non ci sarebbero feriti.
